Guide to Pet CBD

Here are the Most Popular Questions about CBD that pet parents have asked us:

What is CBD?

CBD stands for cannabidiol, which is a naturally occurring compound extracted from the hemp plant. It’s one of the 113 cannabinoids, which are naturally occurring unique compounds found in the cannabis & hemp family of plants.

Will my pet get 'high' with CBD?

No. Our products are considered "THC free" and made from industrial hemp, which is why our CBD products doesn’t make people feel euphoric/'high'. In fact, CBD may actually counteract the euphoric/high feeling caused by THC. Containing a 0.3% or below THC level in the products and in the hemp plants they come from is also a federally mandated requirement by the US Federal Government to be able to make and sell CBD products without the restrictions that the rest of the (high THC) cannabis industry faces.

How does CBD work inside the body?

The plant-based magic of CBD and, in some cases, THC and many of the more than 100 other cannabinoids in cannabis comes from the ways that plant-based cannabinoids closely match cannabinoids our own bodies make as part of the endocannabinoid system we are all born with! These plant based, or phytocannabinoids are such a close match, they can interact with the endocannabinoid system for balance and harmony.

What can CBD for my dog or cat?

Growing number of pet parents are discovering CBD to help their pets in helping with relaxation, and easing tension. Apart from bringing a natural state of general calmness, CBD acts as a plant-based, naturally soothing agent for pets.

How can I be sure that my bottle of CBD does not have more than 0.3% THC?

First, our farmers test the hemp crop many times during its growing and harvesting phase. The crops are also subject to testing by local authorities at any time.

Second, when we buy the CBD-containing hemp extract from the farmers, we require proof of a passing test result showing that the CBD is all there and the THC level is in compliance with the government's guidelines (0-0.3% maximum).

Finally, a randomly selected bottle/jar from every finished product batch is individually tested by another third-party lab to insure that our products contain less than 0.03% THC. Usually the THC level is so low none shows up in the lab tests at all! Every product's lab results are posted here.

If you would like a printer copy of the lab results sent with your order, drop us a line, or make note of it in the comments during checkout.

Can my pet overdose on CBD?

You may notice effects more related to the extra dose of oil vs giving too much CBD to your pet. Our products are made with hemp oil and CBD, and is designed to have relaxing effects. The extra oil itself, in addition to your pet's usual diet, may lead to grogginess as well. If you do take notice of any behavior in your pet that would not be expected from a meal that had more fat than usual, contact your veterinarian.

My pet is on several medications or pregnant. Can I give her CBD?

Talk to your veterinarian first.

How much CBD should I give my pet?

Every pet is different. Same way you can drink 4 cups of coffee and feel perfectly find and your friend can drink one cup and stay up all night. Our products are made with pet’s weight as a guide for CBD doses: small, medium and large size dogs and cats. Each product has a dosage recommendation. We strongly recommend using that as a guidance and observe your pet until you have found a right dosage that fits their health, age and weight.

What is full spectrum CBD? What is Isolate? Which one is better?

CBD Isolate is 100% pure CBD powder extracted from industrial hemp and then  isolated all the way down to that one molecule.

Full spectrum CBD extract is a more complete oil extracted from industrial hemp. Because it is left in a more natural state, it still contains a lot of good things you get from a plant: cannabinoids, terpenes, antioxidants, omegas, and other plant nutrients naturally present in the hemp plant.

Think of full spectrum CBD extract as fresh-squeezed orange juice, and CBD isolate as a vitamin C pill made from oranges. The complete orange juice has a ton o vitamin C... but it also has a lot of other great nutrients from the orange, like fiber and antioxidants!

Products made from full spectrum CBD extract like Pets Strong's CBD line provide more complete nutrients than products made from just CBD isolate, as it still has a multitude of the cannabinoids and terpenes that work so well together, as nature intended. We believe full spectrum CBD extract is far superior to CBD Isolate. The whole symphony instead of one instrument playing together and creating balance and harmony.

What is the difference between the hemp plant and the marijuana plant? They kind of look alike.

Marijuana is an outdated nickname for high THC cannabis used for recreational euphoric/high feeling. Actually, both industrial hemp and what was referred to as marijuana come from the same plant; they are all Cannabis sativa L. The only difference between them is how they are bred by farmers based on what the end use will be.

When cannabis plants are bred as Industrial Hemp, it is grown to have high concentrations of CBD, but contains only traces amount of THC (less than 0.3% as mandated by US Federal Government regulations). It is called industrial hemp because the stalks are very fibrous and long, and useful in making textiles and other materials.

When cannabis plants are bred to be high in THC, they have lower levels of CBD. These crops are used to make THC-containing medical products for licensed dispensaries only.

Why does my bottle smell like cannabis?

Industrial Hemp, like all Cannabis sativa L plants (see above) not only vary in CBD and THC levels- they also have ranges of over 120 terpenes they share in common. These terpenes, which are the agents that give all plants their different aromas, provide that characteristic smell. You'll notice that some CBD products don't have a very strong cannabis smell. That is often due to using CBD isolate instead of a high quality CBD extract that retains a multitude of natural hemp plant nutrients (including terpenes).

Is CBD legal in USA?

As of November 2018 passage of Farm Bill 2018, growing of commercial or industrial hemp is allowed federally in the USA. Under the 2018 Farm Bill, hemp and hemp derivatives have been permanently removed from the federal Controlled Substances Act and are no longer considered illegal by the DEA as long as they always contain less than 0.3% THC.

Individual states can have their own regulations regarding hemp crops and resulting CBD products, however, and due to local regulations we are not able to ship CBD products to the following states where the sale of CBD is prohibited: Idaho, Nebraska, and South Dakota
